Slovenia the fun facts

April 25, 20265 Minutes

Slovenia is one of the most beautiful places you can imagine. With its diversity, it is a rare jewl. A few facts about Slovenia you might have missed — and a couple that need a small reality check, because mythology and national pride sometimes blur together in the best way.

We are poets, not warriors
In the heart of Ljubljana, the capital city of Ljubljana, there’s a poet standing in the main square. France Prešeren is not just a statue; he’s a cultural anchor. His verses are so embedded in identity that they feel less like literature and more like architecture.

We breed baby dragons
Deep underground in the Karst world of Slovenia, in places like Postojna Cave, you’ll hear stories of dragons. But what actually lives there is stranger than fiction: the olm, a blind amphibian often called the “human fish.” It looks like something between a myth and a mistake of evolution, which is probably why people called it a dragon baby in the first place.

We have the oldest grapes
In Maribor, in the northeast, there is a vine in the district of Maribor that has been growing for over 400 years. The “Old Vine” is considered one of the oldest producing grapevines in the world. It still bears fruit, which is a quietly absurd statement when you think about it.

We invented the wooden wheel
In the Ljubljana Marshes Wheel, dated to around 5,200 years ago, archaeologists found what is widely considered the oldest wooden wheel with an axle in the world. It was discovered near Ig, south of Ljubljana, and is now kept at the City Museum of Ljubljana.

We love
No country in the world officially contains the word “love” in its name ecept Slovenia.

We have dual
As for “udal in our language” — if you mean the dual grammatical number, that one is actually real. Slovenian is one of the rare languages in the world that preserves the dual form, meaning you don’t just have singular and plural — you have exactly two. Two people, two things, its own grammatical space for togetherness.

We invented music
In a cave at Divje Babe Cave, archaeologists discovered what is often called the oldest flute in the world — a piece of bone with carefully spaced holes, believed by many to be over 50,000 years old. It’s commonly referred to as the “Neanderthal flute,” which, if true, means music isn’t even just human — it’s older than us.

We have the most beautiful river
The emerald river Soča is so vividly turquoise it looks edited. It isn’t. It’s naturally that color due to limestone sediment. It’s one of Europe’s most visually surreal rivers.

We have one island
Lake Bled has a tiny island in the middle with a church on it. Tradition says you ring the bell there to make a wish. Locals don’t question it. Visitors do it anyway.

We have Ski swimming
Slovenia is one of the few countries where you can go from Alps to sea in under 2 hours. In the morning you can be skiing, and by afternoon swimming in the Adriatic, but you can catch a cold.

We are safe
Slovenia is one of the safest countries in the world, with extremely low violent crime rates — which is part statistics, part cultural tendency toward low drama.

We have more trees than you can cut
Slovenia is one of the most forested countries in Europe — over half the country is covered in trees. Bears still live there freely, just quietly minding their own business.

We toast a lot
The national anthem of Slovenia is “Zdravljica”, written by the poet France Prešeren, was originally structured as a toast.
