How do you capture terroir before the wine exists?
Wine label design Ljubljana projects often wait for production, but Karuan demanded immediate visual storytelling. We translated Slovenia’s Karst geological patterns into tactile wine label design Ljubljana collectors will recognize as authentically regional.
Client: Karuan wine
The brief
Create a label that captures the timeless, rugged character of Karst itself. We needed to distill the essence of stone, wine, and people into cohesive visual storytelling — designing for a perfection that might take years to achieve.
Our approach
We built the design around dominant stone textures that directly reference geological patterns throughout the region. This rough, tactile surface becomes the foundational element that protects and celebrates everything the land represents.
Outcome
The label succeeds by letting landscape drive identity rather than imposed branding conventions. We created packaging ready for production when timing aligns with terroir.
Wine label design · Visual identity · Packaging concept
Stone patterns before the first bottle exists.
The Why here is timing — Karuan needed their visual identity before production could validate it. Most wine label design Ljubljana projects wait for the liquid, but terroir exists in geology first. The What became a direct translation: Karst stone textures lifted from the region and applied as the primary visual system. The How was tactile printing that makes the label surface feel like the limestone itself. We committed to roughness over polish because that is what the land gives you. The Values are geological honesty and regional specificity over wine industry conventions.
The Design centers on one decision — stone texture as the dominant element, not decorative accent. Everything else serves that texture: typography that does not compete, color that amplifies the natural variations in the rock surface, layout that lets the geological patterns breathe. The label works as a piece of the landscape that happens to carry information. The Story is anticipation — this label promises a wine that will taste like its place because it looks like its place. We designed for collectors who understand that authenticity comes from the ground up, literally.
