How do you turn a surname meaning “potato bag” into 500 pages of cultural wisdom?
Notebook design Ljubljana requires understanding how personal meaning becomes tactile experience. We transformed our founder’s surname Žakelj—meaning “potato bag”—into a 500-page cultural artifact that demonstrates how notebook design Ljubljana connects folklore with contemporary craft.
Client: Visual Brain Gravity
The Brief
We needed a studio gift that meant something beyond typical promotional items. The challenge lay in transforming personal identity into functional object—finding the cultural weight that a simple surname carries when it appears in twelve traditional Slovene proverbs.
The Execution
We letterpress-printed all twelve proverbs containing “žakelj” throughout the notebook pages, creating cultural discoveries alongside blank thinking space. The packaging became a real potato bag, because sometimes the most obvious choice is the right one.
Outcome
A fat notebook that connects every handwritten note to centuries of Slovene understanding about life and meaning. Physical permanence over digital convenience.

A surname meaning “potato bag” becomes 500 pages of cultural weight.
The Why was avoiding typical studio promotional items — we needed something that carried actual meaning instead of brand noise. The What transforms our founder’s surname Žakelj into a cultural artifact through notebook design Ljubljana methodology. Žakelj appears in twelve traditional Slovene proverbs, which we letterpress-printed throughout 500 pages, turning personal identity into functional object. The How required finding every proverb containing “žakelj” and placing them where they create rhythm rather than decoration.
The Values are folklore as living material and surnames as cultural containers worth opening. Most people treat family names as empty identifiers. We treat them as archives. The Design lets the proverbs breathe — letterpress gives them physical presence without competing with the notebook’s primary function. The Story is simple: what seems humble often carries the most weight. A potato bag holds more than potatoes when twelve generations of speakers embed it in their wisdom.
