How do you brand a concept that lives in empty space?

Cryptocurrency logo design presents unique challenges when branding concepts that exist in digital negative space. We solved Hodl’s branding challenge by carving a coin directly from the typography’s white space, creating a Red Dot winning logo that speaks to both crypto veterans and newcomers.

Client: Hodl

The brief.

In crypto, “hodl” means holding your coins through market volatility. The term carries deep cultural meaning that excludes newcomers, so we needed to make insider knowledge accessible without losing authenticity.

The solution.

We carved a coin from the white space inside the letters themselves. The negative space becomes the hero — a literal representation of holding something valuable while clean typography lets the hidden symbol emerge naturally.

Outcome.

A logo that crypto veterans instantly recognize and newcomers can decode. The brand communicates blockchain fluency while remaining human.

A cryptocurrency logo carved from its own negative space.

The Why behind Hodl started with a paradox: how do you brand something that exists in digital emptiness? Cryptocurrency lives in negative space, and “hodl” — crypto slang for holding through volatility — carries insider meaning that shuts out newcomers. The What became clear: make the hidden visible without losing authenticity. The How solved itself once I saw the white space inside the letterforms. I carved a coin directly from the typography’s negative space, making the absence the hero. The Values are restraint and revelation — no decoration, just discovery of what was already there.

The Design works because it operates on two levels simultaneously. Crypto veterans read the cultural reference immediately. Newcomers see a clean wordmark with a coin tucked inside — accessible but not dumbed down. The Red Dot jury understood what I was after: a logo that functions as both typography and symbol, where the negative space carries more weight than the positive forms. The Story writes itself — holding something valuable that others cannot see, which is exactly what hodling means in crypto culture.
