How do you visualize 40 years of economic wisdom in a world running out of time?

Sustainable book design projects demand innovative approaches to complex subject matter. Visual Brain Gravity developed a sustainable book design solution for Gregor Žakelj Sr.’s economic research, combining natural growth patterns with data visualization.

Client: Gregor Žakelj Sr.

The brief.

A personal project. Gregor’s father spent four decades developing a new model for sustainable economy, then four years writing it into 400 pages. The challenge was creating a book cover that would capture both the urgency of our environmental crisis and the depth of economic research within.

The symbol.

We merged a pie chart with tree growth rings — dendrochronology meeting economics. The visual metaphor is immediate: economic data structured like nature’s own accounting system. Time is running out, but the rings suggest we can still choose growth that works with natural cycles, not against them.

Outcome.

The cover became a manifesto. The book now speaks to readers before they open it, making complex economic theory accessible through a single powerful image.

The era of capitalistic socio-economic system presuming constant growth and the desire for profit, driven by the human greed, is coming to an end due to the course of nature. Nevertheless, the constant economic growth is presented as a remedy to all the sorrows, a mantra being constantly repeated by politicians and government economists, a fetish, a belief, almost a religion...

Humankind has reached a socio-economic point where each person must defeat their own desire to ‘have more’, especially if they do not need this ‘more’...

We strive to achieve socially responsible management of available resources, ensuring an innovative relationship towards nature and society...
